On October 11, 1993, Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk appeared on Late Night With Conan O'Brien to perform Human Behaviour and to sit for a brief interview.
Conan asked the then 27-year-old about growing up and her musical development in Iceland. She told him that the country is full of 'isolated people who actually know how to control and operate electricity.'
'They sneak and listen to American radio and they kind of get what's going on in Europe as well, and they misunderstand it in a beautiful way.'
In another interview from the same year, she mentioned that she was excited when The Sugarcubes gained international attention, because she could go and see live bands. When she finally did, she was sorely disappointed. The performances were stagnant, no one was taking any risks. And so, she went to clubs.
There are two things I've taken from this: that misunderstanding could be a beautiful thing and that just because one thing doesn't work out doesn't mean you should stop looking.
